The art gallery exhibition guide and hundreds of artist reviews :

Buying Art

If you are keen to invest in something attractive to put on your wall, but you don't know very much about art, you would be well advised to seek out some expert guidance before you embark on the buying process. Art can be extremely expensive, and unfortunately, forking out a huge sum isn't a guarantee that a piece will age well or escalate in value.

The first thing that you need to decide on as a prospective buyer of art is what purpose your purchase will serve. Are you keen to buy something as an investment, for example? Or are you keen to find the canvas equivalent of semi permanent eyelash extensions attractive, but not necessarily authentically artistic, as such.

Your answer to these questions determines the sort of thing you should be looking at. It stands to reason that if you aren't interested in artistic pedigree that you should spend thousands simply to have a painter's name hanging on your wall.

Rather, you should seek out affordable, attractive pieces that will compliment the interior of your home. Instead of shopping at galleries and high-end art dealerships, wander around craft markets or even have a go at creating something yourself.

If you are about to embark on an art-buying process, it is crucial that you decide before you start what kind of thing you are looking for. If you don't, you might end up spending thousands on something that means nothing to you, and that is clearly a situation you would like to avoid.
